Diamondback Terrapin Project: Save the turtles!

The Diamondback Terrapin is a species of special concern within the state of New Jersey and up and down the coastal areas.  Every year more female terrapins are being killed while attempting to nest in the spring.  Here at Seaview, have a unique property for these terrapins, as it provides them with a safe environment for the females to nest in.  Unfortunately as safe as the course may be for the females to nest in it is equally as dangerous for the eggs once they are laid and the babies when they are hatched due to predators such as foxes, crabs, black crows, hawks, etc.  Not only did we want to protect the population of terrapins that called Seaview home, we were also concerned about raising awareness outside of our property.  We were able to partner with The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and with the Wetlands Institute to develop a plan to protect these nesting sites from the common predators.  Fortunately both of these entities were equally as concerned about the dwindling population of the terrapins and we were able to schedule an informational seminar as well as a terrapin release in which we released 15 Diamondback Terrapins onto our property.  As part of this project we also made a $500.00 donation to the Wetlands Institute.  Using this donation they are able to place micro-chipping technology into a turtle which was released at our property.  With this technology they can track migration habits, nesting habits, and general population numbers.  The release was unique because we were able to not only release baby terrapins into the wild and the micro-chipped terrapin, but we were able to release rehabilitated terrapins back into the wild that had been injured by vehicles and other causes.  By utilizing the local and regional media organizations, The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, and the Wetlands Institute we were successfully able to create an environment in which the Diamondback Terrapin can survive and successfully nest on Seaview property, as well as raise public awareness and concern for the dwindling Diamondback Terrapin throughout the great state of New Jersey.

General observation on Audubon for our property:

Here at Seaview, we have a property that totals almost 600 acres.  Within this expanse of acreage we have many diverse environments and natural settings. We are privileged to have one of the golf courses border the marshlands and wetlands of ReedsBay.  This gives us the unique opportunity to have a very positive environmental impact.  Becoming an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary has helped us enhance wildlife habitats and protect our natural resources while showcasing Seaview’s dedication to environmental awareness and responsibility to our community, our resort guests, our employees and our company’s leaders.
